Biographical Sketch

Peter Hitt was born in Germany in 1682 and died in Virginia in 1771. Harmon Hitt was the fourth child of Peter; Martin Hitt, born in Virginia on Dec. 29, 1763, was the ninth child of Harmon. He was a member of the Baltimore Conference Methodist Church. He moved from Virginia in 1794 to Kentucky, where all of his children were born, including William Washington Hitt, the fifth child of Martin, who was born on Feb. 11, 1801. John Wesley Hitt, brother of William, was born March 8, 1803. The family moved from Kentucky to Ohio in 1815; William became a physician and opened the first wholesale and retail drug store on the Wabash River. He served as one of the charter members of the Board of Trustees of the Indiana Asbury University for fifteen years, two years of which he served as President of the Board. He was elected delegate from Knox Co., IN to the Constitutional Convention, which met at Indianapolis in 1850-51, to make the Constitution of the State of Indiana. He died on Aug. 17, 1876.
