To keep the correct balance between the social and intellectual, is a task that many know not how to perform. Thus students become one-sided and finally leave school dissatisfied with themselves. School life is a drudgery to many a student because he has not learned the Gospel of work and has not tasted pleasure as the fruit of labor. Some things are to be learned in college-not alone facts and formulas; of these we learn few after all, and they are the most inconsiderate part of our training. But method and power of study and investigation are to be sought diligently. Loyalty to truth and a correct view of life are indispensible to true success; these are to be cultivated. How many are seeking these great ends? To get through, to learn so many facts, this is the usual goal. "The only wonder is that one head can contain it all!" A little reflection upon the true ends of a college training would enable students to attain to a higher culture. It is too often the case that a student things he can stay out a term and then come back and go on with his classes. While this may be true in some cases, we think they are not numerous. No one at home, unless exceptionally situated, has either the time or the facilities for study which he has here at college, and so he can not do in the same time the work which his class does and which he would here. Then, the amount of knowledge gained during recitations on topics and questions arising incidentally is very considerable, all of which the absent student loses. Furthermore, the daily recitation sifts out, so to speak, the weak places in one's knowledge of a subject. It shows him where and, to a degree, how much he lacks of a complete grasp of what he thinks he knows. It is one thing to know, but it is another and greater to know and to tell clearly and completely. But it often happens that causes beyond ones control, makes a term's absence necessary. In such cases, it is right and proper for the college authorities to take these facts into consideration, and act so as to benefit the student and yet not
