There Is some secret connected with ca let lite at Annapolis, as well as West Point, which seems to peculiarly cultivate the social qualities of the young men who attend, us well as to drill them in the sterner accoutre inents of war or teach them to master the peril of the deep. Messrs. Judg*' ll.iw II. \ "- s s-..r Editor of the SUN: Since the resignation of Judge Downey a few days ago. much interest fiHs arisen concerning the choice of a successor us Dean of the I'niversity Law school. Until now the Law school lias depended almost entirely upon Judge Downey's individual reputation as a judge of law and his magnetic per-sonality. • ■'hich draws the most unap-precia'. lve '.ohim. With scarcely auy facilities in the way of lectures, profes-sors or library, the school has de-pended on Judge Downey's name to cairy it through. It follows, then, since he has resigned, that unless some one of e<i ually good standing be se lected, or the equipments in other lines he improved, the school must deterior-ate or die. As one interested lu the school, I believe, that if possible, some wide-awake, energetic man of high legal reputation should be selected lor in in ami at least one other good man to share the work. And in selecting men for these places, give preference to brains over some particular church re-lation. If the right man for the place can he found in the Methodist church well and good; if not, go where yo i cm lind In in; and do not net some one of mediocre ubility because lie happens to be a friend of the University. Now is the opportunity in the history of the Law school to take some advanced steps. Nor will It do to think we can fill the place temporarily by men, who. though good lawyers, would Ml he Bttea for a position of thisjkind. htaaj contemplative Law students are anxiously awaiting the board's action in 01 ler to determine whether they shall come to Dei'auw or go elsewhem. -i i Li \ i.
